As a life/wellness coach the notion of choices is at the root of my practice as most folks who find me are in a quandary about the next steps to take on this journey we call life. Some folks that see me don’t really believe they have any choice other than the path they are following – they just want me to somehow suggest a fix to their current situation so they can continue on their chosen road. Others know that what they are doing won’t work but don’t have a clue what to do differently. Some have tried a number of different options only to be frustrated at the lack of anticipated results they are experiencing. These are just a few of the possible scenarios that arrive at my door as I ply my trade.
So what do I suggest? Well, each client is different – so each discussion about choices and options can vary over a wide spectrum of possibilities. I have made it my business to explore and learn a lot of self-help techniques over the years so that my clients have tools they can take with them to explore and work with at home after our meeting. The real key to success, however, rests in the understanding that we all are at choice every moment of every day – even if it is just to decide to decide – to choose power and peace over victimhood and martyrdom. This, of course, is more easily said than done. Change is always tricky and requires our attention and intention so we can build new habits and new neural network pathways. In the throes of difficulties, it is not an easy task to believe we are at choice. But, in actuality, the difficulties are always our first opportunity to begin the change process.
There is a very simple formula that I have used over the years to start moving in a new direction that I share with clients:
(1) Decide what you don’t want – this is always in the difficulty that you are experiencing so it is pretty easy to identify.
(2) Knowing what you don’t want should help you identify what you actually do want – so what is it that you desire?
(3) Now that you have identified what you want the tricky part begins – this is when you need to “feel” what it would be like to actually experience your heart’s desire. A number of tools that I suggest to clients help them in this step but the essence of it is always, always to stay in that place of joy and excitement about the object(s) of your desire(s). If you have momentary lapses, you can bring yourself back to the joy state by imagining something that makes your heart sing – a beautiful sunset, a sweet puppy, or Autumn leaves are a few of my favorites. This is necessary because you attract by your vibration not your thinking – so beginning to make a habit of staying in joy and gratitude is the key to success.
(4) Finally, let go of any need to “know” how this is going to occur or how you can possibly make this happen – the magic is to stay in a joyous state of expectancy and follow the signs that surely will show you the way.
While this may seem too simplistic in this complicated world of ours, I have experienced and witnessed the most miraculous outcomes time and time again. May it be so for you and yours. Ashay and Amen
