I have been pondering the subject for this issue for some time – allowing it to rattle around in my psyche – hoping to have a germ of an idea. Having had little luck, as fortunately, my life experiences have never required emergency physical shelter, I was ready to give up until I had an epiphany.
What if this word shelter could also encompass the idea of emotional protection – I surely have had times in which I have been in need in that area. My life has always had more internal turmoil as opposed to external happenings that rocked my boat.
I distinctly remember a time that changed the way I look at the world. I was a young adult in a job that was stressful when my mother had surgery and almost died from internal bleeding. My father, who I had always thought of as a strong man, fell apart dealing with the situation. My brother found himself in yet another crisis at the same time that affected the entire family. I reacted with what has come to be known as my signature response to stress – spastic colon, now known as irritable bowel syndrome. Then, however, I didn’t have a clue what it was and ended up in the hospital.
Always one who thinks too much – I lay in a hospital bed doing my best not to be a bother to anyone – another signature response which I have overcome much to the dismay of some folks around me. I began to feel sorry for myself because none of my family had bothered to check on me, and I truly needed emotional shelter (a cover of protection). Out of the blue, a gift was delivered. A lady who was my astrology teacher at the time and who I didn’t know very well, sent a beautiful terrarium with a note of comfort. I was deeply touched and also experienced an aha moment – a realization that changed my entire perspective and I am sure my life – The cavalry always shows up, it just may not be who or what you expected it to be.
Since that time, I have had my ups and downs through a life filled with rich experiences. I have always ended up in the place that grace was offered mostly because I don’t miss it looking in all the wrong places. What better gift than knowing assistance will arrive and be a delightful surprise at the same time. May it be so for you and yours. Ashay and Amen
