IRREPRESSIBLE ART

Art,
What is it?

Art is
More than the oil on canvas
Soaring notes,
Ink on the page,
Or twirling across a stage.

When looking at the play,
Sculpture,
Magnificent edifice,
We only see, hear, feel
Skill’s interpretation
Of imagination.

The dazzling dance number,
Tasteful dish,
And intoxicating design,
Do not tell the whole story.

Most often
The work
Is not evident
In the work of art,
Any work of art.

It begins with an urging,
Sometimes an urgency within consciousness,
Seeking expression.

Something beyond senses
Longing to be communicated,
Viewed,
Heard,
Experienced.

Something beyond form
Longing to touch
And to be touched.

Formlessness
Desiring to be seen,
Felt,
Received.

Pathos,
Whimsy,
Love,
Beauty,
Deliciousness,
Exhilaration,
Satire,
Illumination,
Wanting to be understood,
Waiting to be shared.

Art needs a co-conspirator,
It seeks an artist,
Discovers a minion.

It nudges, nags, or dominates the artist’s consciousness.
It inspires its transcriber,
Torments its accomplice.
It requires
Its own mediums and methods.

Art
May pour itself relentlessly
Through the artist

Or
It may trickle
Over weeks, months, and years.
It may needle the artist,
Demanding perfect execution
Of an ephemeral ideal.

Art,
So sweet,
Masterful,
Sublime and rebellious,
Liberating,
Licentious,
Frenzied and extraordinary.

Art,
Maddening and divine.
